pR Rider Spotlight – Amanda McCray

This week we’re starting up a new feature – each week we’ll be profiling one of our teammates, chosen at random, so you can get to know our membership a little bit better! First up is Amanda McCray, a member of our mountain bike team. Amanda is training for some big mountain bike races this season, and has put in a lot of work over the winter to get ready for the season. Best of luck this season Amanda!

Hometown: Bethel, Oklahoma

Current home: Littleton, Colorado

Discipline and category: I like racing cross-country endurance style mountain bike races. I consider myself sport class.

When did you join pedal? I joined pedal in 2015, best decision ever!

How long have you been riding and racing? I began riding as a kid. I started racing shortly after my hubby purchased me a bike when we were dating. I fell in love with my hubby and my bike! My first mountain bike race was in 2011 in Oklahoma.

What is your absolute favorite road or trail to ride? My favorite local place to trail ride is Buffalo Creek, and if I could ride anywhere it would be a back county road somewhere in the San Juan mountains between Durango and Moab.

What piece of bike equipment/gear can you not live without? I love the Honey Stinger Waffles! Not only do they taste well enough for afternoon tea, they give me enough energy to help me push to the very end without bonking! I could not live without my headphones. I love having one ear open to hear birds and nature while jamming out to some 80’s hair bands! Also, I am in love with the Wahoo Kickr Trainer, it has greatly improved my indoor training this winter.

Favorite thing to do when you’re NOT riding your bike? When I am not riding my bike, I am loving my husband and dogs. I love walking my fur babies at the Carson Nature Center and I love coloring and reading! I also love hanging out with my friends and loving on them!

Favorite motivational quote/saying? “Training is like fighting with a Gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the Gorilla is tired.” Greg Henderson, Team Sky

Amanda2Best race experience or highlight? My best race experience thus far was racing last year in the Bailey Hundito. To start, it’s a great way to help kids get on bikes. I totally am all about that, I have been riding bikes since I was a kid and it’s nice to race knowing you are helping kids fall in love with bikes. The race itself was my first 50 mile mountain bike race. It was the hardest race I had ever raced. I crashed halfway thru the race. I went from being on Cloud 9 to extreme pain in mere minutes. I suffered the most pain I had ever suffered in that race and I was still able to finish. I was ecstatic that I was able to bear down and get it done! It pushed me to enter harder races and I know now that I can still ride even in lots of pain.

What are your goals for 2016? My goals for 2016 is to HAVE FUN, and finish the Silver Rush 50 strong! I am also racing the Hundito and Half Growler this year. So, I feel like I am going to raise my pain threshold for sure in 2016!
